I felt nauseous… At one point I could smell death in the agonizing chambers. It was a rotten smell. The average time that captives survived in these conditions was nine months, before they died. It truly was a place of horror. I entered the prisons, observed the crematories, and entered into the gas chamber. Oh how horrible! The museum is well arranged and documents history with great detail. I saw video coverage, photos, and many artifacts depicting the life of the prisoners.
In order to torture, the Nazis sent prisoners into standing cells, in 1944. These claustrophobic structures were a square of 2‘ x 6“. One could not lie or sit for 72 hours. Torture increased with little light or air. The conditions were maddening. Sometimes, the captives were given a bowl and spoon with no food...a psychological agony. This could go in for days.
